Africa’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup became clearer after Friday’s official draw in Washington, where all qualified African nations learned their group-stage opponents. South Africa, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Tunisia, Cape Verde and Ghana now know the paths they must take — while DR Congo still awaits its fate in the upcoming intercontinental playoffs.

South Africa will return to the World Cup for the first time since hosting in 2010, opening the entire tournament against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on June 11. Their group includes South Korea and the winner of UEFA Playoff D, giving Bafana Bafana a realistic but demanding path to the knockout stages.

Morocco, Africa’s historic 2022 semifinalists, were handed one of the headline openers of the tournament: a marquee clash with Brazil. Group C also includes Scotland and Haiti — a balanced field that gives the Atlas Lions every chance to advance.

Senegal faces a nostalgic test in Group I, where they meet France in a rematch of their legendary 1–0 victory in the 2002 opener. Norway and the intercontinental playoff winner round out a competitive but navigable group for the reigning African champions.

Côte d’Ivoire will take on Germany, Ecuador and Curaçao in a group that offers both danger and opportunity. Egypt, meanwhile, will feel optimistic after drawing Belgium, Iran and New Zealand — a configuration that could see the Pharaohs finally advance beyond the group stage.

Algeria meets Argentina, Austria and Jordan in a challenging field, while Tunisia face the Netherlands, Japan and a European playoff winner. Cape Verde, in their World Cup debut, have Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia — a demanding introduction to the global stage.

Ghana enters a difficult Group H alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars have produced shocks before, but they will need consistency and discipline to progress.

As for the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Leopards must first win their FIFA intercontinental playoff against Jamaica and New Caledonia in March. If they qualify, they join Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

Across all nine African teams — with DR Congo still battling for a tenth place — the 2026 draw reflects both the continent’s growth and the rising expectations on African football. With expanded slots, experienced squads and rising global respect, this World Cup presents one of Africa’s strongest opportunities yet to push multiple teams into the knockouts.

Africa has arrived with ambition — now the question is how far the continent can go.
