Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals who arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday. The move follows what Ghana describes as the alleged mistreatment of Ghanaian travellers at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel.

According to Ghanaian authorities, seven Ghanaian nationals, including four members of an official delegation attending a cyber‑security conference in Tel Aviv, were detained without explanation. They were reportedly held for five hours before being released, while three others were deported. Ghana publicly condemned what it called “humiliating treatment”.

Ghana’s foreign ministry stated that a senior diplomat from the Israeli embassy in Accra was summoned over the incident and that both countries have agreed to address the matter amicably. The BBC contacted the Israeli embassy but has not yet received a response.

Ghana noted that the two nations have shared decades of friendly relations, describing Israel’s alleged actions as inconsistent with that history. The ministry said Ghana expects its citizens to be treated with dignity and respect, similar to how Ghana treats foreign nationals.

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told JoyFM that Ghana would deport one Israeli national for every Ghanaian deported from Israel.

The underlying cause of the diplomatic tensions is not fully clear. The BBC report notes that Ghana’s recent statements regarding the Israel–Palestinian conflict may be a contributing factor. In September, Ghana condemned Israeli air strikes in Qatar, describing them as a violation of international law. The previous month, Ghana called for increased aid access to Gaza, citing civilian suffering. President John Mahama also donated 40 tonnes of Ghana-made chocolate and cocoa products to Palestinians, reaffirming Ghana’s support for a two‑state solution.

Ghana additionally stated that Israeli authorities linked the dispute to accusations that Ghana’s embassy had not cooperated with deportation procedures. Ghana maintains that its embassy in Tel Aviv is responsive and compliant with international law. Israeli authorities had requested assistance deporting six individuals, including one person from Gabon and another described as too ill to travel.

As Ghana and Israel work to resolve the incident, Accra emphasizes the importance of respect and dignity for its citizens abroad.

Even in tense moments, nations continue to grow, learn, and strengthen their diplomatic maturity as young democracies evolving on the global stage, with hope guiding the path forward.
