Burkina Faso has begun construction of its first expressway, a 332 kilometre highway linking the capital Ouagadougou to Bobo Dioulasso in the country’s south west, marking a major infrastructure milestone for the landlocked Sahel nation.
The project was inaugurated near Ouagadougou by the country’s military leader, Ibrahim Traoré, under the Faso Mebo initiative, an ambitious state driven programme aimed at modernising Burkina Faso’s infrastructure.
Authorities say at least 357 million dollars has been earmarked for the project in the 2026 national budget, with funding sourced from locally generated revenues rather than external borrowing. The government has positioned the expressway as a strategic economic corridor that will improve domestic mobility while strengthening regional trade routes.
Once completed, the highway is expected to ease traffic flow between Burkina Faso and key West African ports, including Abidjan, Lomé, Tema and Cotonou, providing a faster and more reliable link between coastal economies and the Sahel.
Officials say the expressway will support trade, logistics and economic integration within the Alliance of Sahel States while contributing to long term development goals through improved transport efficiency and regional connectivity.
For a country often defined internationally by insecurity and political transition, the launch of its first expressway signals a different narrative — one focused on infrastructure, self financed development and regional relevance. Africa’s journey is still young, shaped by nations building foundations rather than inherited advantages, and projects like this underline a continent still laying the roads toward its future, with momentum, ambition and room to grow.
