Tony Elumelu Foundation at 16: Empowering African Entrepreneurs Across 54 Countries

The Tony Elumelu Foundation marks sixteen years of impact, reinforcing its position as Africa’s leading philanthropy dedicated to empowering young entrepreneurs across all 54 countries on the continent.

Founded in 2010 by Tony O. Elumelu, the Foundation has built its mission around a clear and consistent principle. Africa’s economic transformation must be driven by Africans, with entrepreneurs at the centre of that change. This philosophy is grounded in Africapitalism, which positions the private sector as the key driver of long-term social and economic development.

Since its launch, the Foundation has delivered measurable, continent-wide results. Over 2.5 million young Africans have gained access to business management training through its digital platform, TEFConnect. In addition, more than 27,000 entrepreneurs have received over 100 million US dollars in seed capital through the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme.

The impact of these investments is significant. Supported businesses have generated over 4.2 billion US dollars in revenue and created more than 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs. The Foundation’s work has also contributed to lifting approximately 2.1 million Africans out of poverty, while positively impacting more than 4 million households. Women account for 46 per cent of supported entrepreneurs, reflecting a deliberate focus on inclusion and equitable access.

Beyond funding, the Foundation operates a comprehensive ecosystem that includes training, mentorship, and networking. This structure has enabled it to reach entrepreneurs across diverse sectors and regions, while also supporting tailored programmes in fragile and underserved communities.

The Foundation’s reach has been strengthened through strategic partnerships with global and multilateral institutions, including the European Union, United Nations Development Programme, International Committee of the Red Cross, United States African Development Foundation, African Development Bank, Google, UNICEF, and others. These collaborations have expanded the scale and reach of its initiatives, including programmes focused on women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship in fragile states.

“As an entrepreneur myself, I understand what it feels like to yearn for a lifeline, to hope for a big break,” Elumelu has stated, reflecting the personal experience that continues to shape the Foundation’s work.

Sixteen years on, the Tony Elumelu Foundation represents a model of African-led philanthropy that prioritises long-term investment in people and enterprise. Its work aligns economic opportunity with social impact, demonstrating how structured support for entrepreneurs can drive sustainable development across the continent.
