South African club Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned champions of Africa after securing a 2-1 aggregate victory over AS FAR in the CAF Champions League final.
A 1-1 draw in the second leg in Rabat proved enough for Sundowns, who had taken a 1-0 advantage from the first leg. The result marks the club’s second continental title, adding to their maiden triumph in 2016.
Key moments decide tense final
The match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium unfolded in front of a packed home crowd backing AS FAR. The Moroccan side leveled the tie just before half-time when Mohamed Hrimat converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Divine Lunga.
However, Sundowns responded almost immediately. In first-half stoppage time, midfielder Teboho Mokoena struck a powerful half-volley that hit the underside of the bar and went in, restoring his team’s aggregate lead.
With away goals still in effect, AS FAR needed two more goals to overturn the deficit, increasing the pressure as the match progressed.
Goalkeeper heroics seal the win
The decisive moment came in the second half when AS FAR were awarded another penalty following a VAR review. Once again, Hrimat stepped up, but this time Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a crucial save to deny him.
The save proved pivotal, draining momentum from the home side and allowing Sundowns to manage the closing stages of the match.
Despite late pressure, including a missed opportunity from Jalal-Eddine El Khfiyef, Sundowns held firm through eight minutes of added time to secure the title.
Redemption after last year’s disappointment
The victory comes a year after Sundowns lost the final to Egyptian side Pyramids, making this triumph particularly significant for the team.
In addition to continental glory, the South African champions receive a record $6 million prize and qualification for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
A bittersweet domestic context
The triumph arrives during a mixed period for the club. Just a day before lifting the continental trophy, Sundowns lost the South African league title to Orlando Pirates, ending their eight-year domestic dominance.
A moment of pride for African football
Sundowns’ victory highlights the competitive strength of African club football, with teams from across the continent continuing to challenge for top honors.
For South Africa, the win reinforces its place among Africa’s football powerhouses and showcases the depth of talent within its domestic league.
As African football continues to grow in global visibility, moments like this reflect both progress and potential. The continent’s clubs are becoming more competitive, more professional, and more ambitious on the global stage.
Africa’s football story is still unfolding. With continued investment, rising talent, and growing fan engagement, the future promises even greater achievements for clubs across the continent.
