Muslims from around the world gathered in Mecca on the final day of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, bringing one of Islam’s most significant religious events to a close as millions completed sacred rituals at the Grand Mosque and surrounding holy sites in Saudi Arabia.
According to Saudi authorities, approximately 1.7 million pilgrims participated in this year’s Hajj despite regional tensions and challenging weather conditions.
Final Rituals Draw Pilgrimage to a Close
On Friday, worshippers prayed around the Kaaba, the sacred structure at the centre of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, marking the final day of the pilgrimage and the conclusion of Eid al Adha celebrations.
Earlier in Mina, pilgrims carried out the symbolic stoning ritual for a third consecutive day. The ceremony involves throwing pebbles at pillars representing Satan and commemorates the Prophet Abraham’s rejection of temptation and his obedience to God’s command.
The ritual remains one of the most recognised and spiritually significant events of the Hajj journey.
Pilgrims Endure Intense Heat
This year’s pilgrimage took place under difficult weather conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in several areas.
Many pilgrims carried umbrellas, sought shade where possible, and poured water over themselves to reduce the effects of the intense heat.
Saudi authorities repeatedly encouraged worshippers to remain hydrated and minimise direct exposure to the sun during the most demanding stages of the pilgrimage.
One of Islam’s Largest Gatherings
Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is required at least once in a lifetime for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey.
Every year, the pilgrimage brings together believers from hundreds of countries, making it one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world.
The successful completion of Hajj 2026 marks the end of several days of worship, prayer, and reflection for millions of Muslims who travelled to Saudi Arabia seeking spiritual renewal.
A Journey That Connects the Global Muslim Community
Beyond its religious significance, Hajj demonstrates the global nature of the Muslim community, bringing together people from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds in a shared act of faith.
As populations continue to grow across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, participation in Hajj is expected to remain a defining spiritual aspiration for millions. For many African pilgrims, the journey represents not only personal devotion but also a connection to centuries of religious history and tradition. While challenges such as climate conditions and logistics continue to evolve, the enduring significance of Hajj shows how faith, unity, and resilience continue to shape communities across the continent and beyond.
