For more than three decades, Cape Verdean artist Gil Semedo has been building a musical bridge between his homeland and the millions of Cape Verdeans living abroad.
Born in Cape Verde and raised in the Netherlands, Semedo grew up navigating multiple cultures and identities. While many artists focused on local audiences, he recognized a gap within the Cape Verdean diaspora, a community spread across Europe, Africa and the Americas that often struggled to balance its heritage with life abroad.
That experience would ultimately inspire the creation of Caboswing, a genre that blended Cape Verdean musical traditions with international influences and offered a cultural home for a generation searching for identity.
The Birth of Caboswing
Semedo began writing songs as a teenager and quickly found success singing in Cape Verdean Creole.
Influenced by American pop and R&B, Dutch culture and traditional Cape Verdean music, he developed a distinctive sound that merged multiple musical worlds.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Michael Jackson alongside Cape Verdean legends including Bilimundo, Norberto Tavares and producer Manu Lima, Semedo crafted a style that felt familiar yet entirely new.
The result was Caboswing, a genre that combines elements of coladeira, funaná and batuque with pop, zouk, Afro-Caribbean sounds and R&B influences.
For many members of the diaspora, the genre became more than music. It became a symbol of belonging.
According to Semedo, listeners embraced Caboswing because it reflected their own lived experiences of navigating different cultures while remaining connected to their roots.
Music as Identity and Leadership
As Caboswing grew in popularity, Semedo’s role expanded beyond that of a musician.
Many fans began viewing him as a cultural leader within the Cape Verdean diaspora. One of his best-known songs, “Nos Lider,” reinforced that reputation and reflected his belief that everyone has the potential to inspire others.
Throughout his career, Semedo has consistently promoted messages of unity, confidence, and cultural pride.
Rather than viewing identity as limited by geography, he embraces a broader vision.
His philosophy is simple: people can celebrate their roots while also seeing themselves as citizens of the world.
A New Chapter Three Decades Later
Semedo’s latest album, Caboswing: O Novo Capitulo, arrives 33 years after the release of his debut album Caboswing.
The project continues the musical journey he began in the early 1990s while introducing a new generation of collaborators.
Working alongside younger artists and producers allowed Semedo to modernize the sound without abandoning the core elements that made Caboswing successful.
The album blends contemporary production with the familiar rhythms and themes that have defined his career.
Songs celebrate identity, cultural pride and connection while introducing fresh energy that appeals to younger listeners.
Among the standout tracks is “Hello Mama Africa,” a tribute to Africa that combines Caboswing rhythms with Afro House influences.
Preserving Culture Through Music
One of Semedo’s most iconic songs remains “Maria Julia,” released in 1995 and inspired by his sister during a difficult period in her life.
The song incorporates elements of batuque, a traditional Cape Verdean musical and dance style known for its powerful rhythms and cultural significance.
For Semedo, preserving traditions such as batuque has always been an important responsibility.
He believes music can introduce global audiences to Cape Verdean culture while also helping younger generations maintain a connection to their heritage.
That commitment remains central to his work today.
A Message of Hope in Challenging Times
While the world faces growing uncertainty and social challenges, Semedo says his mission remains focused on spreading joy, hope and positivity.
He believes music should inspire people and remind them of the beauty that still exists around them.
Themes of optimism run throughout his latest album, including tracks such as “Adios Loneliness,” which explores love, healing and emotional renewal.
For Semedo, hope is not simply a theme. It is a responsibility.
Where Culture, Identity and Future Meet
Gil Semedo’s story demonstrates how music can become more than entertainment. Through Caboswing, he helped create a cultural language for a global diaspora while preserving the traditions that shaped him.
More than thirty years after introducing the genre, his work continues to connect generations and strengthen cultural identity across continents.
For Africa and its diaspora, Semedo’s journey is a reminder that culture remains one of the continent’s most powerful exports. As African music reaches larger global audiences, artists who protect heritage while embracing innovation will continue shaping the future.
Africa’s cultural story is still evolving, and pioneers like Gil Semedo show that preserving identity and embracing progress can move forward together.
