The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has ordered the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) to pay €820,000 in compensation to former Libya national team head coach Aliou Cissé following a contractual dispute over unpaid wages.

According to reports cited by a Senegalese news outlet, Cissé was appointed head coach of Libya’s national football team in March 2025 on a two year contract with an option for a third year. His reported monthly salary was $80,000.

The dispute arose after Cissé reportedly went unpaid during the final eight months of his tenure. The Libyan Football Federation attributed the salary delays to financial difficulties facing the organization.

Cissé resigned from his position in April 2026 before filing a complaint with FIFA over the unpaid wages. FIFA subsequently ruled in his favor and ordered the Libyan Football Federation to pay €820,000 in compensation.

Following his departure from Libya, Cissé was appointed head coach of Angola’s national football team, ending a brief spell with Libya’s Mediterranean Knights that was overshadowed by the contractual dispute.

The ruling highlights the importance of contractual compliance and financial governance within football federations, as FIFA continues to enforce regulations designed to protect coaches, players and football professionals worldwide.

At The Voice of Africa, we believe African football has the talent to compete with the very best in the world. Sustained success, however, depends not only on performances on the pitch but also on strong institutions, financial accountability and professional management. As African football continues to grow, strengthening governance will be just as important as developing the next generation of players and coaches.
