Libya has emerged as the leading destination for Tunisian fruit exports, accounting for 73 percent of the country’s total fruit shipments during the first half of 2026.

According to the Tunisian News Agency, Tunisia exported 13,877 tons of fruit between the beginning of the year and July 8, with Libya purchasing the majority of those exports.

The figures underscore the growing importance of trade between the two neighboring North African countries, whose economies remain closely linked through cross border commerce and agricultural exchange.

In a related development, Libya also ranked as the third largest importer of Egyptian food products, behind only the United States and Saudi Arabia, according to data released by Egypt’s National Food Safety Authority.

The Egyptian authority reported that its food exports to international markets included 737 product categories, ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to processed foods and grain products.

The latest trade figures highlight Libya’s expanding role as a key regional market for agricultural and food exports despite ongoing economic and political challenges.

Trade between North African countries has continued to strengthen in recent years through new transport links, bilateral agreements and efforts to improve regional economic cooperation.

At The Voice of Africa, we believe stronger intra African trade is one of the continent’s greatest opportunities. Every shipment exchanged between African nations helps create jobs, strengthen regional supply chains and keep more economic value within the continent. As Africa continues expanding trade under regional integration initiatives, partnerships like these demonstrate the potential of African markets to drive long term growth and shared prosperity.
