Zimbabwe has officially qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, marking their first appearance at the global tournament in 36 years. The Sables clinched the spot after a thrilling 30-28 victory over Namibia in the Rugby Africa Cup final held in Kampala, Uganda, ending Namibia’s longstanding dominance in African rugby and rewriting history for Zimbabwean sport.

This victory sees Zimbabwe join 24 teams competing at the next World Cup and represents their third-ever appearance at the tournament, having previously featured in 1987 and 1991. It also marks a significant comeback for the Southern African nation, which had been absent from the competition for over three decades.

The match itself was fiercely contested, with both teams tied at 16-16 at halftime. Zimbabwe pulled ahead in the second half with tries from Godfrey Muzanargwo and Brandon Mudzekenyedzi, putting them in a commanding position. However, Namibia responded with tries from Jay-Cee Nel and Adriaan Booysen, cutting the deficit to just two points with ten minutes left on the clock. In the dying minutes, Namibia’s Tiaan Swanepoel attempted a long-range penalty kick from inside his own half, but the ball sailed wide, sealing Zimbabwe’s dramatic win.

The result not only secures Zimbabwe’s return to the Rugby World Cup but also ends Namibia’s run of seven consecutive World Cup appearances dating back to 1999. Namibia, coached by former international star Jacques Burger, will now look to keep their hopes alive through the Final Qualification Tournament, beginning with a play-off match against the United Arab Emirates, the runner-up in the Asia Rugby Men’s Championship.

Zimbabwe’s triumph signals a resurgence in the country’s rugby fortunes. Long seen as a sleeping giant in African rugby, this qualification is a major step toward revitalizing the sport within the nation and across the continent. With renewed national pride and momentum, the Sables are now preparing to represent Africa on the world stage alongside current World Champions South Africa in 2027.

This achievement is more than just a sporting milestone it’s a defining moment that reflects Zimbabwe’s determination, skill, and resilience. As the countdown to Australia begins, the nation can look forward to seeing the Sables return to the global spotlight, ready to compete, inspire, and make history once again.
