In a heartfelt demonstration of solidarity, the Government of Ghana has donated 40 metric tons of cocoa-based food items to the people of Palestine, aiming to provide relief amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The initiative was formally announced by President John Dramani Mahama on August 1, 2025, during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, diplomats, and humanitarian representatives in Accra.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama described the donation as both a humanitarian response and a gesture of shared humanity, emphasizing Ghana’s deep-rooted empathy for the plight of Palestinians, especially the vulnerable populations affected by the escalating conflict.
“The images and stories emerging from Gaza, particularly the suffering of innocent civilians, are heartbreaking,” he remarked.
“It is in this spirit that Ghana is extending a donation of 40 metric tons of chocolate and cocoa-based nutrition products, produced under our esteemed Golden Tree brand, to the people of Palestine.”
According to the President, the cocoa items, which are locally manufactured using Ghana’s world-class cocoa beans, are intended to serve not only as a source of comfort but also as critical nutritional support, particularly for children and mothers grappling with food shortages in Gaza. He described the gesture as a reflection of Ghana’s natural wealth being shared for a cause of compassion.
Beyond the donation, President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s unwavering support for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He called once again for a two-state solution, advocating for diplomatic engagement and peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.
“We urge all parties to return to the path of dialogue. Peace is the only viable solution,” he affirmed.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Palestinian people, Ambassador Abdalfatah Al-Sattari conveyed deep gratitude to the Government and people of Ghana. He spoke movingly about the suffering endured by Gazans due to continued blockades and violent escalations over the past two years.
“You cannot imagine what it will mean for our people to see chocolate again, and not just to see, but to eat it,” he said, visibly emotional. “This is not just food; it is a message of hope, a reminder that we are not alone.”
The Ambassador also acknowledged the broader international support Palestine has received from nations such as Egypt and France, and reiterated the global call for a two-state solution as the only pathway to a sustainable peace in the region. He emphasized that the cocoa donation would reach its intended recipients in Gaza, despite the logistical challenges posed by the conflict and restrictions on humanitarian aid.
The donation ceremony underscored Ghana’s legacy of pan-Africanism and international solidarity, echoing the country’s longstanding tradition of supporting global justice and humanitarian causes. Representatives from humanitarian organizations present at the event noted the significance of providing not only caloric nourishment but also emotional reprieve in times of crisis.
President Mahama concluded with a heartfelt message of empathy and unity:
“To our brothers and sisters in Palestine, know that you do not walk alone. Ghana stands with you. May peace prevail.”
This initiative stands as a powerful symbol of international compassion, offering not just sustenance but solidarity in a time of deep suffering.
