Ivory Coast delivered one of the biggest surprises of the World Cup warmup schedule on Thursday, defeating France 2–1 in Nantes thanks to a standout performance from Guéla Doué.
The defender scored the equalizer before setting up the winning goal for Amad Diallo as the Elephants came from behind to secure a confidence boosting victory over one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
France Take Early Control
France looked dangerous throughout much of the match and created several opportunities through captain Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise and Rayan Cherki.
Goalkeeper Yahia Fofana played a crucial role for Ivory Coast, producing a series of important saves to keep his side in the contest.
France eventually broke through in the final minute of the first half when Cherki weaved past two defenders and finished low past Fofana to give Didier Deschamps’ side a 1–0 lead.
Doué Changes the Game
Ivory Coast responded strongly after the break.
Eight minutes into the second half, Guéla Doué collected a through ball from Nicolas Pépé and finished confidently to level the score.
The goal added another layer of intrigue to the match as Doué’s brother, Désiré Doué, was part of the French squad and started the game on the bench.
With the match appearing destined for a draw, Guéla Doué produced another decisive moment. His low cross from the right flank found Amad Diallo, who fired home six minutes from time to complete the comeback.
Deschamps Nears End of Historic Era
The match also carried emotional significance for French supporters.
Many fans displayed posters thanking Didier Deschamps, whose tenure as France coach began in 2012 and included the 2018 FIFA World Cup title and a runners up finish in 2022.
Several players involved in the recent UEFA Champions League final remained on the bench for much of the match, including Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaïre Emery, Désiré Doué, Lucas Hernandez and William Saliba.
Eyes Turn Toward the World Cup
France will play Northern Ireland in Lille on Monday before travelling to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Les Bleus open their campaign against Senegal on June 16 in New Jersey.
Ivory Coast will begin its tournament against Ecuador in Philadelphia on June 14.
A Statement Beyond the Scoreline
For Ivory Coast, this result is more than a warmup victory. Defeating a former world champion demonstrates the growing quality and confidence within African football ahead of the tournament.
African teams continue to produce elite players competing at the highest levels of the global game, and performances like this show the continent’s football ambitions are growing stronger. The road ahead remains challenging, but Africa’s football story continues to evolve with talent, belief and increasing competitiveness on the world stage.
