In a major move aimed at reshaping its energy landscape, Zambia has signed a $1.1 billion agreement to construct a large-scale crude oil refinery and energy complex in Ndola, located in the Copperbelt province. The initiative represents one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure undertakings and is expected to play a transformative role in reducing Zambia’s reliance on imported fuel.

The proposed refinery will have the capacity to process approximately 60,000 barrels of crude oil daily, which is sufficient to meet Zambia’s current national demand for petroleum products. Beyond satisfying local consumption, officials suggest the facility could also serve as a strategic energy hub for neighboring countries, enhancing Zambia’s role in regional fuel supply and trade.

Once operational, the refinery is anticipated to significantly curb the country’s fuel import bill, saving millions of dollars annually and helping stabilize domestic fuel prices. Government representatives highlight that the project is aligned with Zambia’s broader development strategy, focusing on industrialization, energy security, and economic resilience.

The refinery will not only ensure a steady and affordable fuel supply but also create employment opportunities and foster skills development within the energy and engineering sectors. While details regarding construction timelines and investor participation are expected to be released in the coming months, early indications point to strong interest from both local and international partners.

The Ndola-based refinery is set to become a critical piece of Zambia’s economic diversification agenda and a symbol of its shift toward energy sovereignty. As the global energy landscape evolves, Zambia’s investment in domestic refining capacity marks a bold step forward in strengthening its infrastructure, reducing external dependency, and securing a more sustainable economic future.
